Bottom intends to remind his audience of his play’s unreal nature by showing Snug’s face through the lion’s mask, but, in a delightful irony, this plan will not work when he himself appears as an ass. He is completely transformed, and there is nothing to show Titania that the ass she adores is really a man. However, every member of Shakespeare’s audience knows that the actor playing Bottom is actually a person in a costume. That recognition, along with the realization of how fitting it is for Bottom to be an ass, is at the crux of the comic delight.
