Meeting Mabel Many years later, Mabel Gardiner Hubbard described her first meeting with Bell, in 1874, at her parents’ home in Cambridge, Massachusetts: “I did not like him. ”4 This was one occasion where first impressions definitely did not make or break the relationship. Born in November 1857, Mabel was ten years younger than Bell. He came to her parents’ home to discuss telegraphy, as well as the possibilities of a harmonic telegraph, but he soon became Mabel’s teacher.
