As in the older southern humor, there is a battle going on between the ins and the outs, between respectability and instinctual, irrational behavior, country ways and city slickness. One finds many grotesque episodes in this fiction which, as Sut Lovingood remarked of his stories, may not "sit purfeckly quiet ontu the stumicks ove sum pussons" —as, for instance, the love affair between Faulkner's Ike Snopes and the cow and the hanging of the mule in Truman Capote's Other Voices, Other Rooms.
